Artist Bio

Formed by Oakland teachers Bret Turner and Ian Walters in early 2019, The Tallest Kid in the Room is a musical project all about “livin’ that classroom life.” Folk-driven but blending a variety of genres, the project combines Bret’s fingerstyle guitar and kid-centered lyrics with Ian’s horns, vocals, and production flair, creating toe-tapping tunes with heart.

Their songs cover everything from band-aids, lining up, and Zoom school to loneliness, kickball, big feelings, and small pencils—if it happens at school, chances are they’ve written, or are planning, a song about it. With each track, they consider: How would a kid see this? What does it mean to them? The result is music that resonates across ages, crafted to delight both children and the adults around them.

One of their greatest compliments came from a fan who shared: “My husband rocks your music in the car without our kids—and they got mad when they found out.”
