MARVELLOUS TOYS

As producers of the Sidmouth Folk Festival Children’s Programme, we’ve teamed up with Sidmouth C of E Primary School and Sidmouth Toy and Model Museum to bring you ‘Marvellous Toys’, a collection of new songs written by pupils and inspired by local people’s memories of their favourite toys from their childhood.

A Boy With A Pedal Car

Badger Class were inspired by the memories of Ian Gregory who talked about his 1950s Triang Pedal car that he was reunited with on a trip to the National Motoring Museum in Beaulieu .

Here’s what Ian says about his toy:

“My father bought me a second-hand red pedal car in 1959 for £1. After years of pedalling around our garden, during which the front bumper was broken and many dents made, I painted the pedal car a striking shade of light blue. Some years later as the car began to rust and I had outgrown it, my parents decided that it should go, and put it out for collection by the dustman in 1966. In 2001 I visited the National Motor Museum in Beaulieu Hampshire to see an exhibition entitled “Motoring thru Childhood”. There, in a display case was a pedal car which had been painted blue with the same missing part of the bumper as mine. Convinced it was my old pedal car, I asked Beaulieu if I could buy it. They agreed and £25 was paid. I then spent £600 restoring the car to its original colour of red. The pedal car now has pride of place in the Sidmouth Toy & Model Museum which I established in 2020.”
